I grew up thinking of Elvis more as a funny, smart-ass actor - a more sophisticated Jethro, perhaps, who also happened to sing, rather than the leather-clad rock 'n roll pioneer he'd once been. Oh, but that voice! That voice made all the difference...
The Duke's character in Donovan's Reef set the standard for the free-thinking, fun-loving independent man for years to come.
Though not a happy-go-lucky beach bum like Guns Donovan, George Washington McLintock nevertheless rang true as a proper male role model - especially in his relationships with the women in his life.
Young Tom had it all - brains, courage, money - and a neverending stream of adventures. The scientific angle appealed especially to bright young middle-class boys like me...
'Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?' - we all want to know the answer to that one. His name was pure magic when I was a baseball lovin' kid...

Fishing, especially on the sandy beaches of the NC shore, was one of the few activities that could get me up early in the morning. That fresh, salty smell still resonates in my mind...
After Elvis came the Beatles. We sang 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' at the top of our lungs on the school bus headed home. I must have been just 10 the first time they played The Ed Sullivan Show.
I didn't have a clue what they were really all about, nor did I know then about my own Moravian heritage, but these stars hung all over town during the Christmas season, an inescapable symbol of - something....
I fell down the basement steps and cracked my two front teeth when I was two. Is that why I feared the dentist so? Or was it just the names, first Dr. Blunt, then later Dr. Beaver? "Now this won't hurt a bit," they lied....
My other great childhood phobia - bees, wasps and hornets. Oh, the terrible nightmares I used to have about these tiny creatures!
